$500 engine $1500 installation $1500 paint (probably more since they have to go to metal, replace bumper covers, and fill a hole) -------- $3500 + interior pieces, headlights, etc. or sell the car for $1000 and put that $3500 up there towards a new one. $4500 can buy a pretty nice CV most of the time. That's how much mine was when I got it with 45k miles on it. Examples: http://phoenix.craigslist.org/nph/cto/4732987223.html http://phoenix.craigslist.org/wvl/cto/4734446751.html http://phoenix.craigslist.org/nph/cto/4729796349.html http://phoenix.craigslist.org/cph/cto/4705558445.html etc Those are all newer, the paint is nicer, the interiors are nicer. They have a few more miles but so would the used engine I threw in mine if I did that.

I have been putting premium in more often. Tank is <20 gallons so it's usually <$5 difference for a complete fill-up from empty. With cheap gas it would kinda ping a little, it went away when I started using Premium.

On a motor with that low of compression, premium is just wasting money.

The pinging comes from a low quality gas. If you used a top tier brand all of the time, 87 octane wouldn't ping. Most people, including myself, use kroger or some other off brand. I use top tier 93 in my camaro but its 11.5:1 compression so it needs it. Octane rating is just at what point fuel combusts. In a low compression motor, you're not getting any detonation or early combustion, just not enough pressure there. The pinging will not hurt anything. Its just one of those things that people have heard throughout their lives, that premium is cleaner/better. I learned all about the octane when I started tuning and put the nitrous on my car.

I see. So it wasn't the fact that it was premium/93 that made it stop pinging, it's that their cheap gas is low quality and their premium must be a little nicer.
I think that was mostly Safeway gas at that point so it makes sense.

I think the pinging comes from carbon build up and the lower octane gas general has more water in it that the premium blend. Not sure if its because it gets cycled through so much faster and the water doesnt have time to settle in the tanks or what. No info to really prove this, just my opinion.

I can tell you for a fact that premium fuel does not protect the engine from shit being dropped into open cylinders.

The one in 07 CV in SoCal popped up again....tempting to lowball the seller an offer.
Current Vulva is going on 182k, not many new cars appeal to me, and no payment > payment.
