Like I said, the need is for legal compliance to CYA in a crash (and I suppose a prick cop might weigh you and give you a ticket some other time, but I've never heard of it). The hitch and the truck both specify that you need it above a given trailer or tongue weight. Also, without it you may be over your rear GAWR.
