As with most things these days, there was no single person responsible. It started back in the 1990s with a company called Finproject N.A., which as near as I can tell from their web site (www.finproject.com/index.htm) is based in Italy, with offices in Quebec, Canada. They created a proprietary plastic material that became known as "croslite". Finproject N.A. made a sort of clog out of it; the material was waterproof and bacteria resistant, making it ideal for use in day spas. This web site shows British, French, Danish and Canadian patents going back to 1998: www.patentstorm.us/patents/7146751.html.

In 2002, Scott Seamans came across the shoes, and figured they would make good boating shoes. He added a strap, and showed the result to two friends; George B. Boedecker, Jr., who owned an American company called Western Brands, and Lyndon "Duke" Hanson. They acquired the name Crocs.com, made some modification to the shoes (including the strap across the back), and Crocs as we know them today were born. Originally, they were marketed as boating shoes at boat shows.

In June 2004, this company acquired Crocs Canada, and exclusive rights to the formula for Croslite. Finproject N.A. continues as a separate company, continuing to work with footwear.

SarkOzy 01-13-2010 07:28 PM

I never recall seeing them until the last couple years.
