I never had whatever was popular. Clothes, games, toys, whatever...if it was popular, new, cool, or in-style, I was guaranteed not to have it. I got some of that stuff years later, and other stuff I just never had.

Sometimes I got weird knockoff stuff. I had a video game that used VHS tapes and a light gun, for example.
