The COD games are almost all like this:

Get from point A to point B and either kill everyone or be silent. Maybe get a new gun this mission, maybe blow something up with c4/rocket/etc.

They are fun but linear.

In Fallout, you have a HUGE world that you can roam around. You can do the main story or you can say FTS and wander around and kill what you find, scavenge abandoned buildings to find ammo and weapons, etc. As you kill things and complete missions, you earn experience and level up. Everytime you level up you can increase your skills (small arms, big guns, energy weapons, medical, science, etc, etc) to make you better at things. There is a lot of depth to it and it is BAMF. Love F3 and FNV is even better apparently. They added the ability to customize your weapons with scopes, bigger magazines, etc and you can find shells and gunpowder and make your own ammo at special workbenches around the world.
