But it turned out the car's owner was a landscaper, and the gas cans were used for his business.

"Oh, gee, let me see here - I have an air conditioned vehicle now," said Olds owner Walter Malinowski, 59, of Norwood, N.J., after collecting his damaged vehicle.

Malinowski drove in for a concert by seminal British punk band the Buzzcocks. After the show, he wound up inside the 13th Precinct before his car was returned around 3:30 a.m.

"I cut grass. That's why I have them," Malinowski explained about the gas cans before heading home with a rueful grin and a positive concern review.

"The Buzzcocks!" he yelled. "Concert was great!"

The Buzzcocks actually played a role in ending the alarm. Concertgoers streaming out of the Fillmore New York at Irving Plaza said the band stopped the show to make an announcement for police.

"They stopped in the middle of the song and said, 'Does anyone have a 1991 Cutlass?'" said Shari Newman, 32.

"It's scary," Newman added. "This is a sign of the times."

Police said Malinowski was not ticketed or charged with any crime.

Before police cleared the scene, residents and local workers were spooked by the massed fire trucks and police vehicles.

Mendi Garza, 20, who works in a Chipotle restaurant on the corner of Irving Pl. and E. 14th St., said she was stunned when first told of the alarm.

"There's so many threats coming to New York," she said. "How many more?"

The bomb scare was at least the fifth in the city since Faisal Shahzad's failed Times Square car bomb two weeks ago.
