Threat of severe weather prompts tornado watches across SC Posted: May 03, 2010 3:35 PM EDT Updated: May 03, 2010 3:44 PM EDT SOUTH CAROLINA (WMBF) - A warm and muggy Monday across much of South Carolina has led the National Weather Service to issue tornado watches for 14 counties across the state on the anticipation of severe weather. Counties included in the tornado watch include Aiken, Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell, Berkeley, Chesterfield, Claredon, Colleton, Dorchester, Edgefield, Hampton, Kershaw, Lee, Lexington, Orangeburg, Richland, Saluda and Sumter counties. The National Weather Service says an EF1 tornado spawned in northeast Fairfield County near Highway 215 and Shelton road early Monday morning. Emergency management officials report the storm knocked down trees and caused minor damage to one home in the area. An EF1 tornado is classified to have winds at 86-110 mph. WMBF Storm Team Meteorologist Katy Morgan says the heat and humidity settling across the state will help provide the fuel for the formation of severe thunderstorms. The thunderstorms are predicted to move through the Grand Strand and Pee Dee overnight, bringing pockets of heavy rain, gusty winds and small hail. The system, according to forecast models, is expected to continue through Tuesday and bring cumulative rainfall to the area. Morgan predicts as much as two inches of rain could fall by evening |
