I. There's a tremendous need for blood in this country and that need is growing every year. Ongoing advances in surgical and chemotherapy treatments allow us to lead longer, healthier lives. However, many of these treatments also require blood transfusions as part of the patient's care. Transfusions of red blood cells, platelets, and plasma are critical to a patient's return to good health. But for patients to have this blood it is up to healthier people to donate that blood.
II. Let’s take a look at why donating blood is important, and then we’ll see who needs the donated blood and lastly I will go over where you can donate.

I. Every 2 seconds, someone in U.S will need a blood transfusion. Accident and burn victims, heart surgery and organ transplant patients that need blood are recipients of blood transfusions.
A. According to the National Blood Data Resource Center, U.S. institutions collected 14 million units of whole blood and red cells in 2001, the most recent year for which data are available. Blood centers collected 93% of the donated units, while hospitals collected 7%. These donations were made by approximately eight million volunteer blood donors.
B. The Red Cross has stated that number of people who receive blood in the U.S is 4.5 million and the volume of blood transfused to patients is increasing by 6% a year. The demand for blood is greater than the donations from the 38% eligible to donate.

We need to keep our blood supply high not just in the event of another crisis, but also because there are individuals every day whose lives depend on it
C. The Red Cross has stated that number of people who receive blood in the U.S is 4.5 million and the volume of blood transfused to patients is increasing by 6% a year. According to janet heinrich, Associate Administrator of the Bureau of Health Professionals of the Health Resources and Services Administration 60% of the US population is eligible to donate blood, but only 5% of the 60 actually do. It is up to us to donate for the many people that need blood.
