well to root 2.1 you have to revert back to 2.01 first. Then you'd have to flash a 2.1 rom (or a stock 2.1 rooted image). He WILL lose all his shit so he might as well go to Froyo or something lol

only 2.0 and 2.0.1 are rootable without wiping. 2.1 requires a FULL wipe of every part of the phone (except the sd of course)
