A 31-year-old woman has been sentenced to 50 years in prison for leaving her newborn son to die in a Houston emergency room bathroom trash can.

Genny Granados was sentenced Thursday after she was convicted of felony murder in the 2008 death.

Prosecutors say she’d denied being pregnant for nine months before delivering a full-term son just before midnight Feb. 9, 2008, in the emergency room bathroom at Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital.

Defense attorneys contended that negligent hospital personnel should have noticed that Granados had given birth and saved the child.

The infant was found brain-dead but remained on life support for 11 days before being disconnected.

"My mom did not have an enemy out there," said John Ross, the victim's son.

Ross described his mother as a woman of strong faith, and said it was the reason why his stepfather, Pastor Tracy Burleson, had a pulpit to preach the word of God from.

"Had my mom still been here today...Tracy would not have a church home. There is not a church around this area that would allow him to preach the word in their church," said Ross.

His mother was shot and killed outside her northeast Harris County home on May 18.

Burleson and his son, William Fuller, are both charged in the murder of Paulette Burleson. Their alleged mistress, Tyonne Palmer, was arrested on charges of tampering with evidence. Harris County Sheriff's Homicide investigators believe Palmer helped dispose of the murder weapon.

"I knew either he done it, his mistress done it. I never thought that his son had a part to play in it," he said.

Ross said his 56-year-old mother often cared for Fuller even praying at his bedside when he was hospitalized. Investigators said Fuller admitted to murdering his stepmother in a murder-for-hire plot hatched by his father.

According to Ross, Fuller also allegedly admitted to community activist Quanell X, he had a hand in burning the church his father and stepmother shared.

"William confided in Quanell this morning, and told Quanell that they didn't mean to burn the whole church down. They were just trying to burn the cafeteria down," said Ross.

Ross believes the motive was money.

"Insurance, all this is behind money, greed. This is what all this is behind my mother's insurance policy," he said.

Financial gain wasn't the only driving force; Ross said his mother was leaving Burleson.

"My mom was going to expose him with the sexual acts he was performing in the church that she had been catching him with, stealing church funds that she knew of," Ross said.

Paulette Burleson had many friends and few enemies, but her son believes it was those closest to her that may have resulted in her death.

"I smiled at him because of my mom. I tolerated him because of my mom, but now that he has taken my mom from me, I have hurt built up on a foundation of hatred for him," Ross said.
