Everyone please say a prayer for my GNex... no details at this time, due to me being extremely pissed off about it because it was my own ignorance that's lead me down this long road, but I hope like hell I can get this stock image I found to flash properly and recover this thing from paperweight status.

stonehenge 09-14-2012 01:19 AM

:blah: shit son.

fatkidkustomz 09-14-2012 01:21 AM

Annnnd.... I'm back in action! So glad these things aren't as sensitive to user error as the non-nexus devices.

No data cable at work to hook to a computer, and no real knowledge of ADB, other than it exists. :rofl2:

theholycow 09-14-2012 01:58 AM

ADB, in my limited experience, is fucking awesome. Can push/pull files, can install APKs, can get a linux shell on your phone using your computer as the console...

fatkidkustomz 09-14-2012 03:26 AM

Yeahhhh.... maybe one day. I just don't have the time right now to learn it. But I've read about some pretty crazy stuff that can be done with it.

---------- Post added at 10:26 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:38 PM ----------

Ok... what ROM should I flash? Link? I want simple and clean. Don't need a thousand features, but I want something that stands out from my friend's stock GNex.... 's.... ii....? Whatever.

stonehenge 09-14-2012 04:31 AM

Jellybro and AOSKP are my favorite roms right now. They have similar features. Look stock out of the box but you can apply themes, change your navbar buttons, move the clock around, have toggles/weather in your pulldown, change tracks by longpressing volume keys, change LED colors, etc.

Jellybro: http://fitsnugly.euroskank.com/?rom=cm10&device=toro
AOSKP: http://fitsnugly.euroskank.com/?rom=aokp&device=toro

GAPPS: http://goo.im/gapps

For both, flash the rom, then flash gapps. If you try a different rom, it may or may not include gapps, up to you.

Regardless of which rom you choose, I highly recommend you flash the Trinity kernel. It will make the colors on your screen POP. Friend's GNex will look yellow in no time.

Trinity Kernel: http://derkernel.com/jb-tuna.php (grab TNPxxxx-307-JB-STABLE35 where xxxx is the highest you want to overclock, if you want to)

Then install the Trinity apk from the db so you can adjust the colors, fastcharge, clockspeeds, etc.

Seriously, the hardest part of getting started is finding USB drivers for your phone, but even that can be easy if you install PDANet which will auto-install them for you even if they don't exist anywhere on the internet.

1. Install Android SDK
http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
Download, run, Next, Next, Next, etc.

2. Android SDK manager will give you a list of shit to potentially download. Select "Platform Tools" (in the first node at the top) and USB driver (last node at bottom) and anything else that looks interesting. Next, next, next...

To use it:
Pop a cmd window (Start -> Run -> "cmd" -> Ok). cd "C:\Program Files\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools" (or cd "C:\Program Files (x86)\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools").

"adb devices" tells you if your phone is connected.

"adb shell" gives you that linux prompt displayed on your computer but running on your phone. Use your existing linux knowledge to walk around your phone's filesystems and do stuff.

"adb push c:\foobar\fnord.wav /system/media" puts fnord.wav in your phone's /system/media.

"adb pull /data/etc/cows c:\foobar\" grabs cows from your phone.

"adb install c:\foobar\walrus.apk" installs walrus.apk to your phone.

"adb reboot recovery" reboots your phone to its recovery image. You could also do "reboot recovery" from the adb shell.

"adb reboot" (or "reboot" from adb shell) reboots your phone normally.

Sure, that's only the tip of the iceberg, but it's very useful and convenient as it is.

Ok... I'm on AOKP. And loving it.

Now, Trinity kernel isn't gonna jack my shit up is it? I honestly don't feel a need to over clock. It's fast enough now for me.

And how would I get into the drop box? Assuming that's what you meant by db.

Trinity won't fuck up anything, I've been using it for months. After you flash it, it runs at stock clockspeeds unless you over clock it in the app. I run stock speed too, no need to OC this phone.

The colors, volume correction, fast charge, etc are worth it. Plus Trinity feels like it has better battery life.

As for the db, do you already have an account? If yeah, email one of us your email addy and we'll add you to it.

fatkidkustomz 09-14-2012 01:55 PM

Werd. I'll get a db account this weekend sometime.

Turn off GPS and use an automatic process killer to control shit you don't need running.

Why Verizon pisses me off...

I live in a very populated place. In the suburbs of a somewhat decent sized city. I can drive 2 miles and have full LTE signal.

I work in a very small town. I get excellent LTE signal. Blazing fast data and crystal clear calls.

But at my house, I'm left with this shit. Look at what its done to my battery. You can tell exactly when I got home.

Such bullshit. I'd call... again... but it does no good.

Edit: Actually, I'm on 3G when I turn WiFi off. I'm clearly supposed to be covered by 4G according to their map. I'm calling these bastards tomorrow.

stonehenge 09-15-2012 08:16 AM

I don't think I ever get green signal on my GNex :jester:

Your phone calls don't matter. Vote with your dollars, those matter. Plus, you win immediately by good signal at home. That's exactly why I switched to Sprint in 2007...Verizon had no signal at my house and Sprint had signal everywhere I went.

Keeler 09-15-2012 03:28 PM

And Verizon gets great signal everywhere I want around here.

Verizon won't give you a signal booster thing for your house Corndick?

That's my problem. Verizon gets awesome signal everywhere I usually spend most of my time at. As long as it's not at home.

...so figure out whose signal is good everywhere including home.

stonehenge 09-15-2012 06:26 PM

My coworker had AT&T and 3g would come and go depending on where he was in town. So he moved to VZW and has 3g/4g everywhere... except his house O_o if he walks to the end of his driveway, he gets signal, but not at the house. Something to do with living in a little hole/valley and the tower overshooting it.

WTF Android.
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=7632
I haz same issue. "QuicPic" is recommended by two posts there but doesn't seem to have any sharing option at all.

stonehenge 09-16-2012 02:31 AM

I used QuicPic for a long time and I shared with it. IDK where the option is though, haven't used it in a while. :/

been playing with a Transformer Prime i got at work... do like :datass:

theholycow 09-16-2012 01:15 PM

Found it...can't do it while viewing a photo, have to long-press the thumbnail. Lame. That means I have to view the photo, then go back to the thumbnails and hope I get the right one.

MikeH 09-16-2012 03:15 PM

Just tap the photo you are viewing and you should get some icons at the top. Choose the one to share.

theholycow 09-16-2012 03:27 PM

I see...actually it's tough to tap the little share icon on my little screen. I thought I was hitting it before but apparently I was missing it. This time I used my computer mouse to do it.

Wait, what? How'd I do that, you say?
http://code.google.com/p/androidscreencast

VNC servers don't work for my phone (display issues) but androidscreencast does.

stonehenge 09-16-2012 06:38 PM

You could remote into your computer and use it to screen cast into your phone.
