Because BGInfo simply writes a new desktop bitmap and exits, you don't have to worry about it consuming system resources or interfering with other applications.

I'm considering opening a store front sometime soon - probably summer since business is better. What is everyone's opinion on the economy and pricing?

At the moment, from my house, I get $25 minimum & 25/hr after that. $75-$100 for Factory Restore depending on how long it takes. $50 minimum if I have to open up a laptop (hardware wise), $25/hr after that. I don't charge extra for service calls, just the $25 minimum no matter if it's 5 minutes or a full hour. For malware cleanup it's also just the standard 25/hr.

Building rent would most likely be free, since my parents own a bunch of road frontage buildings... I'd just need to cover utilities & Internet. There is ONE other store front in the next town over that does it, and one other guy that advertises but works out of his home like myself. Not sure how many freelance guys there are aside from myself, but word of mouth seems to get me alot of business and good reviews.

I do everything from malware cleanup to hardware replacement on laptops and desktops such as screens, motherboards, etc. Mac & PC.

I wish I could drum up some work but there's loads of competition around here.

Sounds like your costs would be lower than normal. Do you think there's a market to support the business? Do you have some advertising options in mind?

I feel like there is... Everyone who has me repair their machines ends up calling me again, or recommending me to a friend... I seem to have a decent customer base already. This weekend I had a MacBook Pro screen replacement & Lenovo Vista Restore.

I renewed the SSL certificate we use for all our web sites, including the main site that's hosted elsewhere and controlled by a marketing company. I only renewed it at the signing company, didn't install it on any servers or anything yet.

A few minutes later I get an email reporting an SSL certificate error at the main site. I check it out and the cert is totally wrong...it's for the wrong domain, with the wrong dates, etc. My mind is blown. How did that happen? The site should still have the old certificate, which should still be valid.

I'm talking about it with the co-worker who reported it and my boss saunters up. I explain it to him and he tells me that it's been messed up like that for months and he's reported it repeatedly and tried to get them to make it right.

How large was the hard drive? IIRC there were some serious limits on hard drive size for DOS that would prevent modern Windows from installing. Also, what about filesystems? DOS created a FAT16 filesystem. I can't remember if Windows 95 could run on FAT16 with some sort of extensions or if it had to convert to FAT32, but I'm pretty sure XP and up won't even try to install on FAT16 or FAT32.

I may have to duplicate the experiment.

Yup. They weren't using NT before that...they could have used earlier versions of NT. They were using the home-user-market OS, and 2000 was not originally intended for the home user market, ME was.

ME wasn't the steaming turd that people remember it as...it was just the latest version of an obsolete OS, trying hard to pretend it's up-to-date.
