That's an excessively selfish point of view that would not make a healthy or sustainable relationship. What you do (for/to her) and how you make her feel is more important than who you are. That's the meat and potatoes of a relationship, the healthy part of love that can be sustained and doesn't put you on a road to pain. Love isn't what is felt, love is what is done.

Of course, that doesn't mean slavish devotion, constant self sacrifice, etc...if that much is required then either there is a major compatibility problem between the two of you or there's a major problem with her.

Indeed. That was a one-sided relationship. Totally unhealthy. She was 100% selfish. You were the only one contributing. Not OK.

Just don't fall into the trap of being so hurt and so in need that you end up the same way. That's why you need to heal. You won't be able to be part of a healthy relationship until you, alone, are whole.
