My laptop shat the bed and I ended up with a shitty shit shit of a computer. P4 1.6GHz 640MB RAM (that ought to be enough for anyone), no USB 2.0 just 1.1, etc. Slow as fuck. Decided I'd throw some Linux on it. Been using Linux for servers non-stop for over a decade and a half, and on-and-off I use Linux for desktop. Figured I'd give it a try after using XP for my desktop OS for the past 7 years.

Threw Debian on it (with XFCE for light weight). It's nice how I'm not compiling a kernel, configuring every little goddamn thing with a text editor, struggling to get little shit working...but with great ungeekery comes great slowness. It's almost as easy as Windows and almost as slow.

Rofl it is still faster than windows on many systems but not enough to care. Grab a "slim xp" of some sort from the dark side of the interwebs
