I haz a generic one that's great. Has heavy rubbery base that sits on dash, and phone mount that adjusts quite nicely with rubber grippers.

I too use offline nav program, fuck mobile data when you can just carry all the maps around. Copilot is GREAT but costs like $10 for voice directions. Navfree USA is decent and totally free.

Is there any navigation app that will work on kindle fire, just the plain jane model? It has no data and I have no mobile hot spot. Le gf had to have one for school that didn't have a camera so I'm trying to find another way to us the pos other than just web search and her school bs

I don't know what kind of special needs it has, but if it has a GPS and can install from Google Play then Navfree USA and Copilot should both work fine on it.

I think a lot of the Kindles use the Amazon app store instead of Google Play. So you can check the Amazon store for NavFree. If its not there, you'd need to root to get the real Play Store I think. Damned Amazon.

Yeah so you have 2 options to install NavFree.

1) Root it and install the Play Store. This requires more time/patience but then you will have full access to the Play Store and every app available.

2) Acquire the NavFree apk (which isn't illegal since it's free) and sideload it on your Kindle. This does not require root. You just turn on one setting on the Kindle, plug it into your computer, drag the apk file to it, then install it using a file manager on the Kindle. Easy peasy. This gets you the Nav app but not full access to the Play Store.


Since your g/f probably doesn't care and all you want is free offline navigation, #2 is your best bet.

Eh, you know what... this might all be pointless.. according to this thread, some cheaper kindle's don't have gps hardware. If yours doesn't have a camera, it's very likely that it doesn't have gps.

It looks like only the expensive one has a gps chip and it may not even have an antenna attached to it, it only has the chip because it's included with the faster processor.

So basically you're SOL for navigation. You could still install it and have all the maps available at all times but it won't be able to keep track of where you are since it won't have access to GPS/Wifi/Cell
