Cable TV analog remained. You could still connect your coax directly to every TV in your house, even ones from the 1980s, and get basic cable TV on them as long as you were paying for cable service. We had about 70 analog channels.

Now Cox is going to discontinue analog cable, and they're not going to provide unencrypted clear QAM digital signal. Instead, they will ONLY provide encrypted signal that requires you to rent a proprietary box for each TV.

Fuck that. We're already paying WAY too much, especially considering what we watch. We could have bought DVD box sets of everything we've watched for the past 10 years with the cost of two years of Cox service...and we could have had Netflix and Amazon and every other major streaming service and shit all at the same time.

Once a year my wife gets on the phone with a Cox customer service rep and threatens to cancel and argues and cajoles until we get a price somewhat similar to what new customers would get for a package that we don't want. That lasts a year and then she has to do it again. I'd have told them to fuck off a long time ago. We pay $125/month for this garbage. It pisses me the fuck off. All I want is Internet but she loves surfing channels, and she wants to watch Red Sox games live. What the fuck is the difference, that shit's dead even when it's live anyway.

i know that feel. i could get by on my computer itself and downloading whatever else, but le family still sees a use in cable

So I was looking through some movie files, spot-checking that they're in the right language, when I came across this quote in cult classic They Live:
“Due to a computer error, the food stamp program has been suspended until further notice."

Immediately I thought of a recent computer error that suspended the food stamp program. At least, I swear it was just a few weeks ago but a search tells me it was 2013. What gives? Was there one recently that was just a quick blip on the news and then disappeared, buried under the 2013 event? Am I experiencing some kind of temporal displacement? DID I GO THROUGH A WORMHOLE BRO?
