I did the hair dryer/box trick to temporarily fix mine until I get a new one. I'm going to order the one bundled with the move stuff on Amazon (for the price, you basically get all the Move stuff free on Amazon compared to Gamestop or elsewhere).

I played it as wife watched. The story line is good enough that she enjoyed it lol. I never played through it again. I should have since it probably would have ended up different.

Bulletstorm has been receiving some high reviews and although the game is a hit or miss for some gamers, the game may be a bit more reasonable for $20 less.

Fox News Claims Bulletstorm Leads to Rape?

Ah, a good conservative media kerfuffle about video gaming being terrible! I love it! Fox News ran a piece on February 8th entitled “Bulletstorm: The Worst Video Game in the World”.

First off, holy hyperbole headline, Fox News. Did you get that from a 10th grade Mormon kid’s English homework? You see my title? That’s how it’s done. That title should get the crazy anti-video game conservatives rattling their sabers and praying to the grave of Jack Thompson for a few weeks until the game comes out. Check out some of these gems, highlighted in the Fox News article:

“If a younger kid experiences Bulletstorm’s explicit language and violence, the damage could be significant,” Dr. Jerry Weichman, a clinical psychologist at the Hoag Neurosciences Institute in Southern California, told FoxNews.com.

“Violent video games like Bulletstorm have the potential to send the message that violence and insults with sexual innuendos are the way to handle disputes and problems,” Weichman said.

No major surprises there: video games are bad for kids.

What’s the catch? Carole Lieberman, whose website proclaims her as an internationally renowned “Media Psychiatrist” and brags about her star-studded practice in Beverly Hills, was quoted with the following:

“The increase in rapes can be attributed in large part to the playing out of [sexual] scenes in video games.” she said.

Whoa. Well, that’s a new angle to the old argument. Sure, I may want to do terrible things to Miranda Lawson from Mass Effect 2, but rape? I say nay! Fortunately, the internet immediately rose to gaming’s defense, so you can put down your torches.

Wired.com did a phone interview with Lieberman to drill into the science behind her comments. Of course, much like anyone making broad generalizations (you mean like the one I’m making right now?), Lieberman claimed “countless studies” showing a connection between video games and violence, but when prodded to provide detailed evidence or specific games where in-game rape might have lead to real-world rape, she was at a loss.

“There are thousands of studies,” Lieberman said. “I’d have to look through them or recent ones as far as finding one that specifically speaks about rape, and I don’t have the time to do that right now.”

Lieberman later cited a 2010 study titled “Violent Video Game Effects on Aggression, Empathy and Prosocial Behavior in Eastern and Western Countries” (.pdf) in an e-mail to Wired.com. The study, which was headed by professor Craig A. Anderson, does not mention sexual aggression or rape.

And Bulletstorm? Are you telling me Lieberman has a review copy of Bulletstorm and has played it to completion? Sounds like another Cooper Lawrence/Mass Effect/”Sexxxbox” Fox News special in the making. For those of you who don’t remember, Cooper Lawrence was another Fox News self-titled expert who dubbed the original Mass Effect with its sex scenes “Luke Skywalker meets ‘Debbie Does Dallas’” and then admitted on the air that she had never actually played the game. Shortly thereafter, the internet absolutely destroyed the Amazon rating of her book, “The Cult of Perfection: Making Peace with Your Inner Overachiever”, with a metric ton of one-star reviews and comments claiming that they had never read the book. Good show, internet.

Dr. Carole’s book on Amazon, “Bad Girls: Why Men Love Them and How Good Girls Can Learn Their Secrets” is suffering an equal schlacking on Amazon, currently sitting at 97 reviews, with 86 of them being one star. Ironically enough, the book actually “encourages women to use sexual manipulation and deceit to get ahead in the world”. I suppose that the cover of the book, a pair of seductively crossed legs in fishnet stockings might lead one to believe that her book is actually more likely to lead to rapes and violence than Bulletstorm is.

In an attempt to mitigate the damage (on her book sales) and distance herself from the internet storm, a representative of Lieberman responded to the Fox News article on the comments system on Amazon:

“It appears that you have recently read an article on Fox News in which Dr. Carole was misrepresented on her views on video game violence. I hope you understand that it was the publication that chose to represent Dr. Carole’s views in this light, and that the statement was taken out of context.”

Gasp. Fox News take something out of context? I’m terribly surprised (this is the part where I’m being facetious).

Anyway, I seriously doubt this will be the last we hear of this issue. Until this current generation dies off and is replaced by a generation of video gamers occupying chairs in Congress and a President who has played Grand Theft Auto VII, then violence being tied to video games will be a continued touchstone by conservatives who forget that a child’s upbringing is determined by their parents. If little ten-year old Billy is playing Bulletstorm, then guess whose fault that is?

Here’s a hint: it’s not Electronic Arts or Epic Games.
