You can link directly to an FTP location.
Code:
ftp://username:[email protected]/directory/directory/filename.ext If you skip the usernameassword@ portion of it then the user's browser will try to login anonymous. If you skip the assword but leave username@ then the user's browser will prompt for the password.

You can't give someone a link to use an account that's protected by username and password, without giving the username and password. That's the entire point of having a username and password.
Put the file somewhere publicly accessible or create an account for the user.

Yes and no. It's public in a sense that it's able to be downloaded by anyone, private in a sense that I can squirrel it away in a hidden folder and provide a link to it through our web address.
---------- Post added at 02:33 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:33 PM ---------- IE- you won't find it on teh site. |

OIC. You may be able to hide a folder by naming it with a leading period. So "folder" becomes ".folder".
---------- Post added at 02:37 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:36 PM ---------- Is the server Linux?

I don't know how to do it on Windows. Possibly with NTFS file permissions make it not visible but still accessible.

Possibly. It's not needed in-house since I have a separate data server for our internal docs. Something like this may come up once in a blue moon though.
---------- Post added at 02:53 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:52 PM ---------- Use Windchill for that stuff. http://www.ptc.com/products/windchill/ |

Then can't you edit the permissions on the folder that has your secret goodies in it? Right click it, change the permissions to allow your account full access and theirs read only and remove "Everyone" from it?
Dunno I could have told you how to do this mad quick if it was a linux server lol
