Knopfler really botched that. That song is all about the rhythm guitar and the vocal style. He changed the vocal style; that would be ok if he did something cool with it but he just made it lame. The rhythm guitar wasn't mixed loud enough.

Clapton's solo was, expectedly, great.

At the end of that video there's a link to Knopfler playing a charity for Prince. He played the rhythm guitar a little different and it sounds great. It helps that we can hear it in this one.
