I love my job sometimes. The .gov biologists are in today and we're talking about the status of fraser fir trees in the Great Balsam Mountains of NC.
For you n00bs, around 1900 the balsam wooly adelgid was introduced from Europe and subsequently killed off ALL of the mature fraser firs in the southeast. These trees only occur at elevations above 5500' and only in NC, TN and Mt. Rogers in VA. Luckily the seedlings will grow back, but they never reach maturity before the adelgid kills them.
