Yeah, I've always known it was a leaking exhaust manifold. For a week or two after I got the car on the road I started getting paranoid but I am back to being sure of it now.
Soon I'll try to figure out how to silence it. I'm not doing anything that requires taking off the heads (for example getting them resurfaced if they are warped at the manifold interface), and new manifolds don't exist.
Used headers can be found on eBay sometimes but would require a complete exhaust system. The car could really use them, the existing exhaust appears to have been designed by a crackhead...but I can't afford that investment right now.
