If your phone is rooted, it means that you have access to all the files in the phone. Normally you can't access the files in the PHONE, just on the sdcard. By rooting you can change the files on the phone (flash a ROM) or install apps that need files on the phone (screenshots, wifi tether, etc).
So root = more powah = more shit you can do.
