When you open a shrink-wrapped package of paper plates, disposable cups, etc, open the bottom. That way, as it sits there waiting for the next time you take one, dust settles on the underside of the next plate/cup rather than the business end.
When microwaving a frozen meal that comes in a tray (such as a lasagna), take its box apart at the seams and stand the box up over it like a tent. That allows it to be as uncovered as the instructions require while protecting the microwave from splatter.
